On April 21, youth will host and prepare a meal at a local soup kitchen.

120 youth will renovate an urban area into a gravel garden with lighting, plants and seating for a gathering space in an otherwise unused area.

On April 13, more than 150 youth will clean up a park area and help restore sports fields and gathering places.

During the Cadillac Urban Gardens Community and Youth Week of Service from Saturday, May 4 through Saturday, May 11, 150 youth volunteers will weed, spread compost, water, plant fruits, vegetables, and herbs, and complete various gardening tasks to prepare the garden for the upcoming growing and produce distribution season that supports 750+ households.

The MLK Day Leap for Literacy Project will promote literacy through reading and writing, and building libraries at two facilities which house vulnerable populations, Naomi’s Nest shelter for women and Villa at the Park nursing home.

Volunteers will be packing lunches for St. Aloysius Homeless Outreach program. Volunteers can also participate in a coat and personal care items drive for Redford Interfaith Relief.

Peace Tree Parks and Say Play Detroit will develop a garden onsite at a school. Youth will learn about gardening through a curriculum with age appropriate lessons to educate youth about gardening and the benefits of growing food.

MLK Resource Fair & Board Up Event. AmeriCorps members along with community volunteers will board up and clean up blighted properties in Detroit and host a community wellness event that includes distributing healthy food, cooking demonstrations, air quality resources and exercise activities.

The Honey Creek Community School will host a MLK Service Day event to ensure all residents, families, and students have the ability to serve. The event will feature stations where individuals can share their skills and can participate in multiple service projects to create needed items that will be donated to local organizations.

Volunteers will host learning events for youth that include expressing themselves through art, music and poetry while learning about MLK. Youth will present their music and dance ability by putting on a community presentation that includes lessons on equity and inclusion.
