The MLK Day Leap for Literacy Project will promote literacy through reading and writing, and building libraries at two facilities which house vulnerable populations, Naomi’s Nest shelter for women and Villa at the Park nursing home.

Volunteers will host learning events for youth that include expressing themselves through art, music and poetry while learning about MLK. Youth will present their music and dance ability by putting on a community presentation that includes lessons on equity and inclusion.

The YouthWorks Conservation Corps will serve at Reining Liberty Ranch to do a deep cleaning in the barns for the therapy animals. The farm serves veterans, military, youth and families to provide animal assisted therapy and serves as a local center for environmental stewardship events.

Zeta Beta Zeta’s Dove Project. The Dove Project will provide companionship, home cleaning and small repair projects for seniors. The project will also have volunteers create a gift basket for each senior with items made by members and volunteers to bring comfort to homebound seniors.

Military blankets for our Veterans. Volunteers will sew and knit military themed blankets for veterans in hospice to honor their service to our country at the end of their lives.

Generations Over Dinner will be a multi-faceted volunteer opportunity that honors Dr. King by fostering a sense of constructive action, civic participation, and belonging while combating the corrosive effects of hate on our democracy and safety. Generations Over Dinner is a global initiative to create meaningful multi-generational experiences and conversations.

Mott’s Office of Experiential Learning and two student organizations (Phi Theta Kappa and the Black Student Union) will host an afternoon of No-Sew blanket making for two local shelters.

Peace Tree Parks and Say Play Detroit will develop a garden onsite at a school. Youth will learn about gardening through a curriculum with age appropriate lessons to educate youth about gardening and the benefits of growing food.

Volunteers will be packing lunches for St. Aloysius Homeless Outreach program. Volunteers can also participate in a coat and personal care items drive for Redford Interfaith Relief.

Volunteers to Support VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program). This project will have volunteers canvasing neighborhoods to inform 2,500 households about free tax assistance.
