From its very beginnings in the East End of London in 1865, The Salvation Army has strived to serve suffering neighbors. Last year, with 82 cents of every donated dollar, the Army was able to provide over 1,100,000 meals and almost 300,000 nights of shelter. To over 100,000 children and youth, it provided camping experiences, after-school gatherings for tutoring, recreation and meals, and character-building programs. To thousands of individuals and families, it offered either a warm meal or food for their kitchen at home.
