Opportunities

Front Office Administrative Assistance

There are several daily tasks that an extra set of hands can help with. This includes answering phones, sending out mailings, scheduling appointments, greeting visitors as they come into the building, etc. Volunteers must complete an orientation with the Volunteer Coordinator or Steepletown Program Director, which includes a criminal background and reference check.

GED Tutors

The Steepletown Workforce Development program is in need of volunteers to tutor GED preparation students, age 18 – 24, at the Steepletown Center. Tutoring services are needed in all 4 testing subjects: RLA (Reading & Language Arts), Science, Social Studies and Math. In addition, GED tutors often assist these youth with online job search and development of professional resumes and cover letters. Volunteers must complete an orientation with the Volunteer Coordinator or Steepletown Program Director, which includes a criminal background and reference check. Volunteers must maintain outstanding attendance and punctuality.

Preschool Meal Delivery

Steepletown’s Kitchen Sage training provides meals to six different preschool sites which serves over 350 children daily, Monday-Thursday, throughout the school year and to three different sites during the summer months. Volunteers are needed to drive one of the transit delivery vans. Each route takes less than an hour. Delivery times are at 7:00a.m. and at 10:15a.m. Volunteer for one or more shifts as your schedule will allow. Volunteers must complete an orientation with the Volunteer Coordinator or Steepletown Program Director, which includes a criminal background and reference check.

Adhoc Fundraising Committee

Steepletown hosts two major fundraisers a year for which volunteers are needed to serve on a working committee: Taste the West Side takes place in March and Golfing for Grads takes place in September. These committees convene for six months prior to the event.

About us

Steepletown Neighborhood Services was initiated in 1994 by three neighboring Catholic Churches: St. James, St. Mary, and the Basilica of Saint Adalbert. Each of these churches has been a trusted presence on the West Side of Grand Rapids for over 100 years, providing for the social and spiritual needs of those who live in these neighborhoods. As the demographics of the neighborhood began to change significantly, it was decided that a more organized approach was needed to more effectively serve the community. Steepletown moved into its present location at 671 Davis in 1995 after receiving its 501(c)3 designation. It offers a variety of support services and educational programs, and manages a community center that provides space for several other human service agencies.
