Our mission

The mission of the Michigan Animal Rescue league is to be the community leader in non-profit animal welfare, providing the highest quality of life to dogs and cats through rescue, medical care, short- and long-term sanctuary, adoption, education, and outreach.
Opportunities

Dog Care Program

The Dog Care Program at MARL gives you the opportunity to form relationships with our dogs while providing them with enrichment and socialization. This program is available to volunteers who complete a basic training. Dog walkers must be 21 years old and be able to make at least a three-month commitment of one day per week.

Offsite Cat Adoption Centers

PetSmart in Northville houses a number of adoptable MARL cats in their adoption center. PetSmart volunteers work as a team to ensure that our cats have a clean place to live and plenty of socialization!

Cat Care Program

MARL’s Cat Rooms and Cage-Free Cat Room are maintained primarily by volunteers! We need help cleaning each of these rooms in the morning before our shelter opens to the public. General duties include cleaning, doing dishes, scooping litter boxes, and providing the cats with food, clean water and clean bedding. In addition to cleaning, we also need volunteers to help socialize our cats and kittens throughout the day.
To volunteer in our cat rooms you need to be at least 18 years old and make at least a three month commitment of one day per week. Volunteers ages 13-17 may work cat rooms but need to be accompanied by an adult over 25 years old who is also a volunteer and must perform the same tasks.

Seniors for Seniors

This incredible program is aimed at placing senior cats in need of a home with senior citizens looking to share their life with a special friend. An older cat makes a great choice for a senior citizen. These mature cats don’t ask for much – just a warm place to sleep, good meals, a chance to live outside of a cage and love! Since the cats remain “MARL” cats, we continue to provide and pay for medical needs, including routine exams and vaccinations. A volunteer will be available to help transport the cat to and from any necessary appointments.

Foster

Becoming a foster allows you to experience first-hand how you can make an immediate and lasting impact on the life of an animal that needs your help. Fosters help MARL provide the best care possible for our cats and dogs until they are ready to be returned to the shelter or adopted. MARL continues to provide and pay for veterinary care, food and other needed supplies for foster animals. Fostering can last from a few days to several months depending on the needs of each individual animal.

About us

The Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL) is one of southeast Michigan’s most established animal shelters, serving the community since 1953. MARL provides care to over 1,000 animals each year. These are homeless cats and dogs from right here in southeast Michigan. Some are brought to us as strays while others are surrendered (through no fault of their own) by the only family they have ever known. Some are rescued from situations of cruelty and neglect while others are left on our door step overnight. No matter how they arrive, we want to see every animal in our care thrive and be adopted into a loving home. But we will not allow an animal to suffer and we will not place a potentially dangerous animal into the community.
