Food distribution is a hands-on volunteer role. Responsibilities could include: assisting with room set-up, assisting in unloading food donations, moving and arranging food to facilitate the distribution process, distributing food and helping clients carry food to their cars, packing food boxes , stocking shelves, or cleaning up. This is a great chance for volunteers to interface with our clients. This volunteer activity does require some heavy lifting (a minimum of 25 lbs.) and regular movement. Due to COVID-19, we have transitioned our rotating shelter to an area hotel and are currently housing 100 clients! We are now in need of a volunteer or group to purchase individual lunches or dinners for 100 shelter guests and drop off at the hotel they are staying at. Meals can be catered or cooked in a commercial kitchen. All meals must be individually packed. In order for Lighthouse to plan accordingly, please choose a date 2 weeks out.

About us Lighthouse MI was established in 2019 when Lighthouse of Oakland County and South Oakland Shelter combined forces and merged agencies. LOC was founded in 1972 and started with a group of volunteers who provided food and clothing from the back door of a local church. SOS was established in 1985 by seven religious congregations in Oakland County. The new Lighthouse will leverage the best of both agencies, providing direct services (food, shelter, rental/utility and other financial assistance, clothing, crisis referrals) and stability and housing programs that develop and support self-sufficiency. With over 80 years of combined experience, Lighthouse aims to be a Beacon of Hope to our neighbors who need us the most. Families turn to us seeking support for the most basic of needs such as food or shelter. Many of these people are seeking help for the first time.
