Opportunities

Raise a Puppy

Puppy raisers are the backbone of our guide dog program. They give 12 to 15 months of their time, energy and love to raise a puppy for Leader Dog. Through daily care and training, puppy raisers build the foundation our puppies need to become a trusted guide dog for someone who is blind. You don’t need any previous experience raising a puppy to become a puppy raiser. We’ll help you every step of the way.

Host a Breeding Dog

The future of our guide dog program depends in large part on volunteers who host specially selected breeding dogs. This dedicated group of volunteers provides foster homes for breeding stock moms and dads for the life of these dogs. Leader Dog provides veterinary care, as well as heartworm and flea preventative treatments. The host family is responsible for all costs related to routine care, feeding and transporting the dog to our campus in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Families hosting a female dog are also responsible for the care and whelping of puppies for the first seven weeks of life.

Volunteer On Campus

Our volunteers work in over 70 different positions all over our campus: in the canine center with our dogs, the lobby, the vet clinic, the puppy development or breeding areas. They also work with our clients on and off campus and support our philanthropy, client services, residential services, volunteer engagement, marketing and training staff. Because volunteers are integral to our success, most positions require a minimum commitment of six months. Positions may require some level of training. Our on-campus volunteers are adults 18 or older with a high school diploma or equivalent.

At Leader Dogs for the Blind we believe that everyone deserves a life of independence and mobility. All of our services are provided free of charge to our clients, including travel in the U.S. and Canada, room and board, equipment and training. This means that no one is excluded from living their most fulfilling life due to lack of funds. Our programs are designed to provide our clients with the tools and training to reintroduce them to a life of confidence, safety and independence. Through our full-range of services—Guide Dog Training, Orientation & Mobility Training and Summer Experience Camp—we meet the mobility needs of our clients at every stage of their lives.
