Guest Experience Docent

Enjoy interacting with others? Join our team as a Docent! Guest Relations Docents work at the Lakeshore Museum Center and Muskegon Heritage Museum greeting visitors at special events and programs, offering directions through the Museum, and provide a positive experience to guests at the Museum.

Camp Counselors

The Lakeshore Museum Center offers two camps during the summer: STEM and Enviroworks. For teens 15-17 years of age looking for a career in Education this is a great opportunity to gain some experience working with children with a variety of topics!

Collections & Archives

Assist the Collections and Archives department by preserving artifacts, and providing research on 3-D objects and documents. Collections and Archive volunteers help develop research for upcoming exhibits all while gaining more knowledge about Muskegon and the West Michigan community.

Junior Museum Professionals (JMPs)

JMPs assist with many different programs and projects all year! In the winter, youth volunteers can help with Family Fun Nights and Minecraft Programs. In the summer season, volunteers at the downtown Museum can assist in the new STEM Center or have fun being creative with children visitors during our Saturday special craft days. At the Hackley and Hume Historic Sites, volunteers can assist with the History Buff program, playing historic games on the lawn, or decorating for Christmas. Ages 10-15.

Building & Exhibits

The Museum is always adding to its historic buildings, designing and constructing new exhibits, plus handling the general wear and tear that comes with maintaining a museum. If you are someone who enjoys working with their hands and creating new materials and structures, volunteer for our exhibits and maintenance department to create something everlasting for the museum and the Muskegon Community! Buildings and Exhibits volunteers will be required to pass additional safety trainings for certain tasks.

STEM Center Volunteers

Stem Center Volunteers assist with programs, crafts, and activities in the Museum’s STEM Center. To be considered as a STEM Center Volunteer, you must be at least 13 years old and available for the additional trainings. This is a great opportunity for teens considering future careers in the STEM field!

Education Docent

Volunteer for school tours, play and learn programs, and special programs that center on teaching kids and families about science and history in Muskegon County. Education docents provide supplemental knowledge to exhibits and may be trained on special demonstrations including STEM programs and activities.

How you help We offer a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for youth and adults at the Lakeshore Museum Center and Historic Sites in Muskegon that are sure to meet your area of interest. Individualized training and supervision are provided for all volunteers. Volunteering at the Museum is not only fun, but also rewarding.
