Our mission

The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts believes the visual arts are for everyone, and that they inspire, fulfill, and transform.
Opportunities

Docents

Docents are trained guides who lead museum tours for children and adults. Candidate docents complete a 9-month training course before joining the docent corps, which is offered every two years. The next docent class will be forming in 2022. Docents sign up to lead 1-2 tours a month, for a total of 18 per year.

Programs and Events

The KIA hosts a variety of programs and events each month (each week!) and this is our primary and ongoing volunteer need. Tasks are varied — everything from selling drinks, to food preparation, to helping visitors complete art projects.

How you help

More than 400 volunteers provide more than 6,000 hours of service annually to the KIA. The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is always looking for volunteers. Whether you’re interested in working in our gallery shop or you’d like to assist at a special event, we would love to hear from you!
About us

The KIA is a private non-profit organization which has, since 1924, presented opportunities to the community and visitors from around the world to enjoy and create art. The KIA holds more than 5,000 fine artworks in its permanent collection; presents touring and collection exhibitions in 10 galleries; offers four terms of art classes at the Kirk Newman Art School; and houses the KIA Gallery Shop, featuring artwork by area artists and international artisans.
