Opportunities

Friendly Visitors

You’ll provide companionship and support for a homebound older adult with weekly or biweekly visits, either at the client’s home or destination such as lunch, shopping or other activities. Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network provides consolation and assistance to chronic and terminally ill clients and their families. We partner with them by providing volunteers who will make regular visits (either at the client’s home, hospital or nursing home) and help community members maintain their dignity and enhance their quality of life throughout their remaining days.

Transportation

Each year, Jewish Family Service provides approximately 30,000 rides to older adults and others who otherwise would be unable to attend medical appointments or get to their jobs. As a volunteer in our transportation department, you’ll work one four-hour shift each week helping to schedule appointments for the community members who rely on us for door-through-door transportation. Do you speak Russian? We always have a need for help answering the many calls we receive each week.

Legal Referral Service

The JFS Legal Referral Service was created to help our clients in these tough economic times to obtain legal consultation and possible representation. We are looking for lawyers who are willing to accept at least one pro bono client per year to help with their legal issues including: family law and elder law, debt resolution/bankruptcy, probate, and landlord/tenant law.

Kosher Meals on Wheels

Help prepare and deliver kosher meals to older adults. This program is organized by the National Council of Jewish Women.

Office Administration

While many of our volunteers are out in the community giving back, we also rely on them to work in our office. Administrative volunteers work with Jewish Family Service staff across a variety of departments, helping with clerical work, data entry or any number of other projects that make it possible for us to continue serving the community.

iPad Program for Older Adults

As we age, many of us find ourselves alone more often than when we were younger, leaving us vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness, as well as related health problems such as cognitive decline, depression and heart disease. Fortunately, there are ways to counteract these negative effects. The Tap and Chat iPad Learning program uses technology as a way to target social isolation among older adults. You can help by volunteering one-on-one with an older adult to teach them how to use a tablet or smart phone in order for them to stay connected with their families and friends.

Health Care Navigation

Since 2013, the team of certified health care navigators at Jewish Family Service has helped more than 18,000 community members explore and purchase insurance on the health care marketplace through the Affordable Care Act. That’s in addition to signing up countless more for Michigan’s expanded Medicaid program. Volunteers are needed during open enrollment (November through December) as well as at community events during the rest of the year. Health care navigation volunteers are required by both Federal and State government to participate in online training, which can be done at home.
