Ways to help

Enrichment

In addition to our walking shifts, other forms of enrichment are a priority for both our felines and canines. Enrichment hours are scheduled primarily during the afternoons. This is a time for the animals to have additional activity and socialization outside of their kennel or cage. Enrichment hours are at the discretion of an animal’s needs. Dog enrichment hours may be spent taking additional long walks, or with a playmate in the yard. Cat enrichment hours are mostly spent in our cat room suites.

Laundry

Our laundry volunteers ‘take a bag’ and help our staff stay on top of the constant cycle of dirty laundry. It’s simple! On your designated laundry day: pick up a bag of dirty laundry, bring home to wash/dry, then return. Expect to wash towels & fleece bedding. Laundry days are mutually coordinated with the building staff according to your availability.

Foster Home Providers

GPAAS is always looking for foster homes for both cats and dogs. Our foster homes help teach us more about our animals in a home environment, and play an integral part matching a pet with their ideal adoptive family. Specifically, cases arise which call for certain home requirements unique to an animal’s needs. GPAAS often relies on our foster homes to assist with senior pets, unique medical/dietary situations, home habits and socialization, young puppies and kitten litters.

Dog Walking

At the moment, we ask that all dog walking volunteer applicants are physically capable & comfortable walking our large dogs. At this time, our shelter’s continuous high intake numbers of large, extra large, and strong dogs demands we prioritize GPAAS’ current volunteer opportunities to reflect the daily overall needs and well-being of our shelter dogs. Once we are able to welcome more small dog walking volunteers we will become more flexible with our walking schedule needs. Please check out our other opportunities, including animal enrichment & this section for future updates. Daily exercise is a priority for our shelter dogs. Our walking shifts are 3 times a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. (Dress appropriately). Shift times are 8am, 12pm, and 4pm. Each walking shift lasts for about 1 hour. Expect to walk 3-4 dogs each shift.
