To gather and distribute food to relieve hunger and increase food security in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
Opportunities

Repacking and Sorting Food in the Warehouse

The majority of our volunteers are needed at the food bank itself. About 15% of the food we receive (over 5 million pounds) has special handling requirements. Typically, this involves processing food by sorting, labeling, or repacking it. Example: Repacking 800-pound bins of cereal into family-size portions.

Gleaning in The Fields

During the harvest season, many farmers find themselves with extra fruits and vegetables on their hands. Instead of letting this nutritious produce go to waste, they call us. Every summer and fall, our volunteers pick — or “glean” — these fruits and vegetables for the food bank. Crops include tomatoes, cherries, and apples.

Clerical Work in the Office

With a relatively small staff, Feeding America West Michigan is often looking for help with data entry and other tasks in the office. If you have a background in bookkeeping or guest reception, we could use your help.

How you help

On average, Feeding America West Michigan distributes 25 million pounds of food each year. To do that, we rely on thousands of volunteers, people just like you who have decided they want to take part in the effort to solve hunger in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
About us

Feeding America West Michigan is one of 200 food banks in Feeding America’s nationwide network. It is one of seven Feeding America member food banks located in Michigan. Feeding America West Michigan serves 40 of Michigan’s 83 counties. Its service area spans from the Indiana border north through the western half of the state and extends throughout the entire Upper Peninsula. Feeding America West Michigan serves community members by way of its agency and Mobile Pantry partners. The food bank exists to source food and distribute it throughout the charitable food system in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Food banks like Feeding America West Michigan are essentially the hub from which many hunger-relief efforts stem.
