Ways to help

Dog Walking

Guaranteed to keep you and the dogs healthy and happy! Every dog deserves a nice walk outside every day. The Delta Animal Shelter volunteers take the dogs out for strolls around the property throughout the day. This is also a great time to reinforce good manners and teach your canine walking partner life skills – like walking politely on a leash, sit, etc. Volunteers are asked to commit to one scheduled shift per week. Kennel & Cattery Caretakers

For those who prefer work behind the scenes, you are needed to help care for the animals’ daily needs. Working alongside the staff, volunteers assist with feeding, cleaning, washing dishes, laundry, and of course, passing out treats and toys. Caretaker shifts are 8:00am – 12:00pm daily. We are currently seeking volunteers who can commit to a minimum of once per week for 3 months or more. Individuals should be at least 16 years of age to volunteer independently. Youth ages 10-15 may volunteer alongside a parent or guardian.

Off-Site Adoption Event Volunteers

We need volunteers to help with adoption events held at various locations throughout the area. This involves picking animals up from the shelter and taking them to the location, holding or walking the animals while introducing them to potential adopters, and bringing the animals back to the shelter at the end of the event. We really need more volunteers to help to this in our community.

Adoption Hosts

Adoption Hosts are key in the shelter, truly bringing pets and people together. We are looking for volunteers to showcase and care for the animals in our shelter! By becoming an Adoption Host, you are giving these wonderful pets an opportunity to be noticed by potential families. Hosts will: greet visitors; answer basic questions about animals; show animals to potential adopters; and care for animals’ needs such as refilling food and water dishes, washing soiled dishes and spot cleaning.

Photographers

Do you have a talent for animal photography or want to develop your skills? Photographers are needed to take pictures of our adoptable animals to post on our website. A little bit of your time can help an animal get noticed – and get adopted!

Maintenance/Grounds

The shelter has several acres of grounds and buildings. There is always something that needs to be done – gardening, minor building repairs, painting, cleaning up, etc. Your “handy” skills are always needed somewhere at Delta Animal Shelter!

Admissions Assistant

Our Admissions Assistants welcome incoming animals and their people, reassuring them that they have come to the right place. Volunteers assist in answering questions, help clients fill out the necessary paperwork, perform data entry, and lend a hand in answering phones. Admissions Assistant shifts are Mon-Wed-Fri 12-4pm Tues/Thurs 12-6pm and Saturday 10am-3pm. (Any hours during those times would help.)

Foster Care Parents

Are you willing and able to open your heart and home to temporarily care for the needs of puppies, kittens, cats, dogs or other critters? Foster care is a vital part of the shelter’s ability to care for animals who need just a bit more time or special attention before they are ready to go to a new home. Foster care can vary from a few days to several weeks.

How you help Our volunteers are our most important asset and they do a remarkable job for the animals, the shelter and our programs. Every day, a volunteer improves the lives of the animals here at the Delta Animal Shelter.
About us We are the county’s only animal shelter, providing a safe shelter, food and medical care to over 1200 animals each year. We are an open-admissions shelter, and turn no animal away. We shelter and provide direct care to any animal in need. Each animal receives compassionate care from our staff and volunteers while they wait to be reunited with their families or to find a new forever home. Warm blankets, toys and treats, time spent socializing with caring people; all are a part of the animals’ experience at the Delta Animal Shelter.
