Opportunities

Buddy Up Tennis

Buddy Up Tennis is a weekly high-energy adaptive tennis and fitness program for children and adults with Down Syndrome ages 5+. We enable our Athletes with Down syndrome to flourish, succeed, and reach their fullest potential by providing a unique environment that combines tennis, fitness, and social activities through our weekly 90-minute clinics consisting of 30 minutes of fitness conditioning and 60 minutes of professional tennis instruction.

Athletes are partnered with our volunteer Buddies (ages 14+) to provide support, develop friendships, and reinforce the Coaches’ instructions. We are always looking for more volunteer Buddies to encourage, engage, and empower our Athletes to reach their fullest potential. The most important qualities are a positive attitude, patience, and a willingness to help. There is no tennis experieince required.

iCan Shine Bike Camp

DSAWM is working with iCan Shine to do another Bike Camp in Grand Rapids! Grand River Preparatory High School is generously donating their gym for the camp. The goal of iCan Bike is to teach individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle and become lifelong independent riders. iCan Bike uses adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program, and trained staff to enable individuals with disabilities to learn to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle. Riders attend one 75 minute session each day for five consecutive days where they learn to ride while accompanied and encouraged by volunteer “spotters”. Your role as a volunteer spotter will be to walk/jog/run alongside a rider as they are learning to ride a bike during a 75-minute session (with short breaks) for 5 days Monday through Friday. You will provide encouragement and physical support, as needed.

About us

The Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan (DSAWM) was formed in 1985 by six couples who had children with Down syndrome. Their original aim was to provide support and share knowledge with other families. Through the years, the goals of the Association have broadened to encompass advocacy, public awareness and the distribution of information relevant to Down syndrome.
