ReStore volunteers are the behind-the-scenes heroes who keep Habitat Oakland’s ReStores buzzing. Each shift starts with signing in (and ends with signing out), following guidance from our awesome store supervisors, and showing up ready to be safe, helpful, and have a little fun. You’ll learn new things, share what you already know, and work alongside a great team that believes teamwork makes the dream work.
No two shifts are exactly the same! Volunteers may help organize and process donations, count and record paint and paint supplies in Shopify, and enter donation paperwork electronically. You might clean and test lamps, lighting, appliances, and other electrical items to make sure they’re ready for their next home. If you like hands-on projects, you could help with deconstruction, small store repairs, building inventory quarantine areas, or adding upgrades and features to home goods areas.
You may also help price and display home goods, clean furniture and appliances, consolidate furniture throughout the shift, hang artwork, or reconfigure carpet displays. Some days include assisting customers with pickups and loading (as able), while others focus on keeping the store sparkling—washing windows, sweeping and mopping floors, or merchandising items for social media sales like Facebook Marketplace. Every task helps turn donated items into affordable housing opportunities, so your work truly builds more than a store—it builds community. 🏠💙

ReStore Volunteer
The ReStores are home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials, and appliances to the public at a fraction of the retail price. Sale proceeds are directed back into the affiliate to help other programmatic areas such as the Homeownership Program, Critical Home Repair, Financial Counseling, and Neighborhood Revitalization.
ReStore volunteer tasks typically include organizing inventory, pricing merchandise, assisting customers, stocking shelves, etc. Volunteers may choose to volunteer at the Southfield location or the Waterford location.

Hospitality Volunteers
Due to budget constraints, we aren’t able to provide meals for our volunteers, so it’s always a treat when we are able to find an amazing volunteer who will do so!
Our Breakfast Hospitality volunteers bring breakfast to the site. Our Lunch Hospitality volunteers provide a lunch meal on site. Each meal should include any serving utensils needed, cutlery and paper products. The meal can be anything you choose. We’ve had cold meals (sandwiches/subs, salads) and we’ve had hot meals (hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, pizza, lasagna). Some volunteers bring tablecloths and centerpieces for a nice presentation and serve the food, and others drop it off for the volunteers with a quick hello. Our volunteers, and our staff, appreciate everything so the selections are completely up to you.

Costruction Volunteers
Volunteers play a vital role on construction sites, whether building new units or rehabilitating an existing home. Habitat Oakland offers build days Monday through Friday and some Saturdays, from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm. The affiliate builds year-round, rain, snow, or shine. No specific skills or experience is necessary as tasks are supervised by experienced construction staff and core volunteers. However, there is an age restriction for safety reasons. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate in general construction. Youths between the ages of 14 and 17 may only participate in tasks that are exclusively related to landscaping and painting.
