Opportunities

Tiny Lions Junior Volunteer

Through the Tiny Lions Junior Volunteer program, those age 12-17 have the opportunity to learn more about animal welfare, work with adoptable cats and form new friendships with others their age. The four sessions consist of humane education activities, mentoring and training by humane education staff and volunteers, and hands-on volunteer time to give back to the homeless animals in our care.

Foster

Whether you are a grad student, retired, single, in a family, a couple, or roommates, as long as you can make a commitment to temporarily care for animals and have a household suitable, we would love to talk to you about becoming a Foster Parent. Fostering can last from a few days to several months depending on the needs of the animals and your availability. Extra training is provided for unique circumstances, and medical assistance and questions are handled quickly. All veterinary care, food and animal supplies are provided by HSHV. To foster, you must be at least 21 years old, all your own animals must be sterilized and up-to-date on vaccinations, and you must have experience with the type of animals you want to foster.

Tiny Lions Volunteer

Are you a cat lover who can’t get enough cat in your life? Becoming a Tiny Lions Lounge & Adoption Center Volunteer could be for you. Volunteering here will have you interacting with animals—cats and humans alike—providing excellent customer service and helping keep the operation flowing.

Day of Service

Is your group, organization, or business looking for a way to give back to the community? Offered monthly, this 3-hour program includes education about HSHV, shelter tour, meet-and-greet with an adoptable dog, and 2 hours of hands-on volunteer time. Groups of up to 10 (due to Covid social distancing), all age 18+. While we work to accommodate all volunteers, we recommend that volunteers be able to lift up to 20 lbs. We welcome groups that may include adults who have cognitive or physical impairments. To ensure everyone has a fun, successful day volunteering, we ask that caregivers or a person of support attend with any adults who may need extra assistance. Volunteer assignments are based on our shelter’s need at the time. Typical assignments include administrative work, landscape support, mulch spreading, and cleaning.

HSHV Volunteer

Volunteering at HSHV is a very rewarding experience that can accommodate many skills, talents and interests. Your first step is to attend our interactive, hands-on New Volunteer Orientation. New Volunteer Orientations are held twice a month. During the orientation, you will have the opportunity to tour our facility and meet other prospective volunteers while learning the skills necessary to be successful on your first day of volunteering. The volunteer program is based on a 4 tier system and tasks depend upon level. Opportunities include doing laundry, assisting at events, providing enrichment to dogs and cats, dog walkers, trainers, clinic support, and more.

Family Day of Service

Offered on select Sundays from 10-12pm. throughout the year, this 2-hour program includes education about HSHV, shelter tour, a humane education lesson (geared toward age 5-11), a meet-and-greet with an adoptable animal, and hands-on volunteer time. Up to 3 family members of all ages (for each registration we ask that there is at least 1 adult age 18 and older), though our Humane Education lessons are most applicable to youth age 5-11 years. We ask that there is at least one adult (age 18+) per 2 children. While projects are based on our shelter’s need at the time, your family will be able to choose from two project options: either animal enrichment or an adopter “thank you” project.

Junior Volunteers

Are you an animal lover between the ages of 12-17? We’d love for you to join our Junior Volunteers (JV) team!

Through this program, youth will have the opportunity to learn more about animal welfare, work with shelter animals and form new friendships with others their age. Each session consists of humane education activities, mentoring and training by humane education staff and volunteers, and hands-on volunteer time to give back to the homeless animals in our care. Once the six training classes are complete, JV’s can volunteer at the shelter independently on a variety of days and times.

Be an advoCAT!

HSHV offers a free class for those interested in being an advocate for feral cats. You will learn how TNR helps reduce the number of free roaming cats, lowers stray intake and euthanasia and creates better, less hostile environments for our community cats. You’ll also learn how you can help — and we need you! TNR involves humanely trapping all of the outdoor, free roaming cats in a colony, getting them sterilized, vaccinated for rabies, and ear tipped on their left ear for identification, then returning the cats to their territory. A caretaker continues to provide food and shelter and monitors for any newcomers or other problems. Trapping can be performed by a colony caretaker, volunteers or staff. Colony caretakers continue to provide food, water, and shelter, as well as monitor the health of the colony.

Items we need

Wishlist

Items can be dropped off between 9 am and 6 pm, 7 days a week, into our blue donation bin just inside our front door. We regret we are unable to pick-up any personal donations.

We always need:

  • Gently used or new bath towels (The bigger, the better! Washcloths okay, but please, no hand towels.)
  • Small blankets and pet beds that can be laundered in a normal washing machine
  • Pet food in the original bag/can up to 3 months after the expiration date
  • Scoopable cat litter
  • Canned dog food (They love the Pedigree yellow cans with ground meat!)
  • Waterless pet shampoo, Alcohol (must be 70% CLEAR alcohol – no scent)
  • Liquid Vick’s Solution (for steam vaporizers)
  • Yards of fleece for animal projects
  • Disposable aluminum roaster pans (20 x 12, 8 x 8 shallow, cake pans)
  • Ziploc bags – both gallon and quart sizes
  • Gift cards from places like Amazon.com, pet supply stores, and office supply stores

For more than 120 years, the Humane Society of Huron Valley has been serving the community, saving animals and helping people. HSHV is still the only animal shelter in Washtenaw County, taking in all types of unwanted, injured, lost, stray, abandoned, and abused animals. Today, we help over 14,000 animals and their people every year. HSHV is governed by a board of directors and is supported by generous individual and corporate donors.
