Salem Area Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) organization whose major function is to discover, collect and preserve any material that may help to establish or illustrate the history of the Salem Township area and to use this material to enhance the lives and knowledge of the citizens of the area of Salem Township, Michigan. Its Mission statement is “Preserving the Past for the Future.”

The Salem Area Historical Society is a community resource for collecting and preserving the history of the area and for educating the general public about the history of this area.

The Salem Area Historical Society was founded in 1975. Its headquarters are at its Jarvis Stone School Historic District, which consists of the 1857 South Salem Stone School and the 1830 Dickerson Barn. The Stone School was acquired from the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.SAHS holds seven historic presentations annually to educate the public about items of historical or local interest. Presentation topics have included: Automotive Industry Topics (Henry Ford, Billy Durant, Walter Chrysler, Ford Village Industries), Yankee Air Museum, Beatrix Potter, Lewis Family, Salem Farming, Genealogy Research, Gravestone Restoration, Salem/Plymouth Train Wreck, Grand Hotel, 24th Michigan Infantry, Female Soldiers in the Civil War, and Gov. Mason. Also, the society is in the process of digitizing its archives, which are open for review by the general public. As these archives are digitized, a listing of them is being made available on the SAHS Website.
