The Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan is hosting a five-day iCan Bike camp this summer to teach local children and young adults with disabilities how to ride a bicycle. The bike camp is conducted, through collaboration with our organization as the local host, and by a national nonprofit organization, iCan Shine. The goal of iCan Bike is to teach individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle and become lifelong independent riders. iCan Bike uses adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program, and trained staff to enable individuals with disabilities to learn to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle. Riders attend one session each day for five consecutive days where they learn to ride while accompanied and encouraged by volunteer “spotters”. Your role as a volunteer spotter will be to walk/jog/run alongside a rider as they are learning to ride a bike during a 75-minute session (with short breaks) for 5 days Monday through Friday. You will provide encouragement and physical support, as needed. The camp will run from July 21st-July 25th with an hour long orientation on July 20th. Grand River Preparatory High School is generously donating their gym for the camp. There are time slots available from 8:30am-4:50pm each day and you can choose which time works best for your schedule while completing the registration form.
